GARRISON, MN (08/09/17) – After meeting with Mille Lacs resort owners this morning Representative Matt Dean demanded that Governor Mark Dayton immediately cease the fishing restrictions on the lake and allow people to fish and eat walleye from the lake. The effects of these policies are potentially devastating: Launch business is down more than 75 percent, and business that was valued at $2.3 million in 2005 now could not be sold for $500,000.
“I was pleased to hear firsthand from those whose work is to create a thriving fishing and tourism economy in this part of the state,” said Dean. “These job creators have fallen victim to political posturing again and again under Governor Dayton. But their work is too valuable to be used as a political pawn.”
The Dayton Administration has currently closed walleye fishing on Lake Mille Lacs, at the advice of the Department of Natural Resources. Both political bodies have places various additional restrictions, including making it illegal to “target” walleye, have been placed on Mille Lacs in the last few years. Limiting tourists’ use of Lake Mille Lacs means fewer people visiting the area throughout the year.
“We can’t let an overly-political DNR play politics with the economic future of the area” said Dean. “Minnesota should work to create jobs, foster industry, and support the folks who do both.”
Dean spent the day in Garrison, meeting with resort owners, and touring the lake with a group of disabled veterans.
